The Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshalls and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas all became independent countries in 1986 when President Reagan signed them into existence out of the old Micronesian Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The FSM consists of the four island states of Pohnpei (formerly Ponape), Chuuk (formerly Truk), Yap and Kosrae (formerly Kusaie), and is located in the Caroline Islands in the western Pacific. Palikir, Pohnpei is the capitol. Majuro is the capitol of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Saipan is the capitol of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Koror of the Republic of Palau.
